Eddie Bernice Johnson, the esteemed American politician who represented Texas’s 30th congressional district, left an indelible mark on the political landscape during her three-decade tenure in the United States House of Representatives from 1993 to 2023.

Eddie Bernice Johnson’s political journey began in 1972 when, as an underdog candidate, she achieved a landslide victory in her bid for a seat in the Texas House. This triumph marked a historic moment as Johnson became the first black woman ever elected to public office from Dallas, paving the way for future generations of minority leaders.

In 1977, President Jimmy Carter recognized Johnson’s capabilities and appointed her as the regional director for the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. In this role, Johnson broke another barrier, becoming the first African-American woman to hold the position. Her dedication to public service and commitment to breaking down racial and gender barriers continued to define her career.

Upon her election to the United States House of Representatives in 1992, Eddie Bernice Johnson made history once again, becoming the first registered nurse elected to Congress. Her background as the first Black chief psychiatric nurse at Dallas’ Veterans Affairs hospital brought a unique perspective to her legislative work.

One of Johnson’s notable achievements was her groundbreaking role as the first Black woman to chair the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. In this position, she led efforts to combat Republican resistance to climate change initiatives and played a pivotal role in advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) opportunities for Black and minority students.

Johnson’s advocacy extended beyond committee work as she also assumed leadership of the Congressional Black Caucus. Her influence and dedication to serving her constituents and marginalized communities were acknowledged by House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, who described Johnson as “a tenacious trailblazer, a talented legislator, and a devoted public servant.”

In her final years in office, Johnson continued to champion causes close to her heart, including supporting the Biden administration’s efforts to pass incentives for computer chip manufacturers. Her tireless efforts in Congress reflected a commitment to shaping a better future and addressing critical issues that impact the nation.
