Monica Seles was born on the 2nd December 1973, in Novi Sad, then Yugoslavia, of Hungarian ancestry. She is a former tennis player who rose to the No. 1 ranking in the WTA. During her career she won the following Grand Slams titles: Open Australia championship four times (1991, 1992, 1993, 1996), the French Open at Roland Garros three times (1990, 1991, 1992), and the United States Open twice (1991, 1992). Monica Seles was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2009.

In addition, Seles had to participate in the struggle of her father and coach Karolj Seles against cancer – he died in 1998 (a few weeks before the French Open final, which Monica lost to Arantxa Sánchez Vicario).

After obtaining USA citizenship, Monica helped the US team win the Federation Cup in 1996 and 2000. She also won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in 2000 held in Sydney, Australia. In 2003, Seles suffered a foot injury that left her out of the loop; she hasn’t played an official match since then. At the beginning of 2005, Seles played two exhibition matches against women’s tennis legend Martina Navratilova in New Zealand. On the 15th February, 2008 he formally announced her retirement.
