Letitia James is an American attorney, activist, and politician. She won the 2018 election to succeed Attorney General Barbara Underwood and is currently the Democratic Party’s nominee for Attorney General of New York. She is the first woman and African-American to hold the job.

James’ birth date is October 18, 1958. She was born and reared in Brooklyn and graduated from Lehman College in The Bronx before pursuing her J.D. at Howard University in Washington, D.C. She first served as a public defender before joining the office of the New York State Assembly and ultimately becoming an assistant attorney general (Brooklyn Regional Office).

She advocated in court for kids and families on matters like tenant protection, children in foster care, and kids with disabilities. In November 2017, Tish James was re-elected as Public Advocate by many New Yorkers.

James spent ten years as the New York City Council representative for Brooklyn’s 35th Council District before becoming the Public Advocate. She helped establish the Safe Housing Act as a council member, requiring landlords of some of New York City’s poorest buildings to upgrade tenants’ living conditions.

She exposed the misconduct involved in the over $600 million scam known as the Office of Payroll Administration’s CityTime contract. She also advocated for the passage of a ground-breaking recycling package that included improved access to recycling in public areas, an expansion of plastic recycling, and a new programme for recycling apparel and textiles.
