In the following years, McCord participated in 400 PGA Tour events, but although he never won, his two best finishes were at the Greater Milwaukee Open where he took the second place in 1975 and then again in 1977. He achieved over 20 top-10 finishes during his years on tour. For most of his success as a golfer, McCord credits golf pro Brad Britton who taught him the ins and outs of the golf swing, and helped maintain a steady net worth.

During the 1990s, Gary had a fruitful period as he won the Ben Hogan Gateway Open on the Nationwide Tour in 1991, which is now called the Web.com Tour and the Toshiba Senior Classic and Ingersoll-Rand Senior Tour Championship on the Champions Tour in 1999. While still practicing golf, McCord joined CBS Sports in 1986 when he became a golf analyst, starting a career he still maintains. However, during the years he became noted for his outspokenness, which eventually led to him being barred from the CBS commentary team for The Masters tournament in 1994, when Augusta National Golf Club intervened due to his alleged inappropriate remarks. Nevertheless, Gary continued to cover other golf events aired on CBS, and play a limited schedule on the Champions Tour. He has also served as EA Sports’ Tiger Woods PGA Tour series co-announcer along with David Feherty.

Along with Peter Korstis, McCord operates Kostis-McCord Teaching Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, which also contributes to his net worth.
