Sophia Martinez was the high school sweetheart and first wife of Danny Gokey, who died of a congenital heart disease in 2008.

Sophia had undergone series of surgeries, but eventually passed away just four weeks to Gokey’s appearance on American Idol.

The duo who had known each other since 1997, had been married for only four years.

Gokey credits his success on the show to Sophia. According to him, she was his source of encouragement in music.

In honour of her memory, Gokey had set up the Sophia’s Heart Foundation, with branches in Milwaukee, Nashville, and Sacramento, to cater for homeless children and needy families.

Danny Gokey Music Career

Danny Gokey’s music is delivered across a number of genres such as pop contemporary, gospel, CCM and blue-eyed soul.

Gokey first made headlines after securing third-place at the eighth season of the singing competition TV series American Idol.

Gokey released many albums including “Hope in Front of Me”, “Christmas Is Here”, “Rise”, and “Haven’t Seen It Yet”, all having elements of pop, country, and gospel.

Some of his hit singles include “We All Need Jesus”, “Stand in Faith”, “He Believes in You”, “Agradecido” and “Do for Love”.

Throughout his career, Gokey has received several award nominations, including Grammy nominations for his work in the Christian music genre.

Gokey is a supporter of the Republican party, and was a strong supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.
